What is Henna Tattoo Art?*

The art of applying decorative henna designs to the skin is called Mehendi. Cultures dating back to ancient Egypt use Mehendi in ritual ceremonies like weddings and births. The designs convey blessings of joy, happiness, luck and protection to the bearer.

The designs are freehand and meant to be inspired by the connection made between the Mehendi artist and the Mehendi recipient. This intuitive and creative experience, steeped in ancient history and the celebration of life, is fun and relaxing for people of all ages.

Henna comes from a plant, Lawsonia inermis, native to north Africa, Arabia, the Middle East and South Asia. The leaves are harvested, dried and then ground into a fine powder. This powder is mixed into a paste using a variety of ingredients which release the dye and provide a pleasing aroma. This paste is then applied to the skin in decorative designs, to stain the skin. The paste dries on the skin and after it is removed the stain will darken over time. Henna “tattoos” last 1-2 weeks when cared for properly.

Henna Care

My practice uses all-natural, high-quality, plant-based products that enhance the look, feel and longevity of your tattoo. The following are some steps you can follow to ensure a nice stain.

  1. Remove henna from skin after it has dried (finger nails, butter knife or credit card work well).
  2. Remove any stubborn spots with olive oil and cotton ball or cloth (do not use water or soap). Note: Stain will be a light orange-brown color right after the paste is removed, oxidation over the next 48 hours will darken the stain.
  3. AVOID WATER FOR THE NEXT 24-48 HOURS

You can apply a layer of olive oil before showering or a wax based chap stick to help keep the water off the stain. Note: The less water and soap that comes into contact with your tattoo, the longer it will last.

Tattoo directly after application. Henna still intact.
Final tattoo appearance after henna has been removed.

About Brianna Jones

Artist & Plant Enthusiast

I am an artist. And I am also a plant enthusiast. My practice of mehendi, or henna body art, connects the dots between and honors the completion of my seemingly unrelated talents and passions. From the plant, one receives the sustenance and nourishment essential to life. With mehendi, one uses the power of touch to nourish the spirit and connect with others.

As a plant enthusiast, I touch, understand and celebrate the plant kingdom knowing that the gift of nourishment sustains the body and touches all mankind. As a mehendi artist, I touch the individual, literally and figuratively. The touch and artistry of mehendi is an intuitive experience that results in a strong and spiritual connection between me and my clients. Through the act of touch, I am inspired to provide nourishment and blessings to the planet in all aspects of my life.

I started practicing mehendi 8 years ago after receiving a kit as a Christmas gift. I was instantly attracted to the vine and flower designs which I later learned are symbols used to evoke joy, love and devotion. These designs also utilize small clusters of dots (bundakis) as symbols for water and falling rain in celebration of that which nourishes all life. I love adding dots to my designs, just as much as I love playing in the rain and watching plants flourish. After experimenting with templates, I realized that my true gift is to allow the design to flow freely from me to you representing your uniqueness and the connection we share.

Connection, sharing and blessings are the gifts that mehendi brings to your celebration through a beautiful, fun, relaxing and time honored ritual. I look forward to celebrating with you and your friends and family at your next event.

My practice uses all-natural, high-quality, plant-based products that enhance the look, feel and longevity of your tattoo. Contact me today to schedule an event or an individual session.

Blessings,

B.
